WORKSHOP THEME AND GOALS

The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers and developers from academia and industry in order to exchange ideas about emerging problems during current web projects, and discuss recent and innovative results that may help them.

The main broad topics of the workshop are:

  • Web Engineering: modeling and development of web-based Information Systems, including data management, hypermedia development, web software engineering, web services, e-commerce etc.
  • Hypermedia Development: Linking, navigational design, presentation aspects, development methods, evaluation & metrics, etc.

Both fields have provided several important research results, especially during the last decade. However, very few of them have been transferred to real-life web information systems. Web engineers need time to study all research results in the fields of Web Engineering & Hypermedia, or in related fields, like multimedia, data management, software engineering and network engineering. As this is a time consuming task to be accomplished in the strict timeline of a web project, web & hypermedia research results are not exploited adequately (if at all) during the development of current web information systems.

These research results (plus several more coming up every year) constitute a very complex information space that itself needs to be engineered, in order to be provided to developers in a meaningful and comprehensive way.

The objectives of this workshop are:

  1. to survey and analyze current web development. Are the web engineering & hypermedia design research results used in real-life web projects? Which are the main difficulties web developers face on exploiting these research results?
  2. to highlight the most important research results so far, survey, classify and discuss them.
  3. to discuss better means to transfer this knowledge (to make it easily accessible) to web developers, in order to put in use web engineering and hypermedia design principles and techniques.

WORKSHOP TOPICS

The main broad topics of the workshop are: Web Engineering and Hypermedia Development.

More specifically are:

  1. Surveys of recent research results or innovative research results on:
    • development methods & process modeling
    • requirements capturing, analysis & modeling
    • designing techniques & notations
    • design patterns & good practices
    • testing methodologies
    • evaluation & metrics
    • maintenance issues
    • domain specific research (e-commerce, education, business processes, etc.)
    • security and authentication
    • social and legal aspects (like copyright, privacy, accessibility, ethical issues)
    • quality assurance & project management techniques

  2. Surveys of Technologies & Tools or presentation of innovative Tools on:
    • Semantic Web
    • Web Services
    • Data Management
    • Data Integration
    • Server Side Programming
    • Server Side Scripting
    • Client Side Scripting

SUBMISSION DETAILS

Please prepare your manuscript following the instructions provided by Springer (See Author guidelines for more details). Papers should be at least 8 and no more than 12 pages in length, and should be submitted no later than May 21st, 2004 in pdf format via e-mail to spc@hpclab.ceid.upatras.gr.

Accepted papers and the outcomes of the workshop panel will be included in the workshop proceedings and published on the Web.

Additionally, an extended version of selected papers will be published on a special issue of the "Journal of Web Engineering" after the conference (http://www.rintonpress.com/journals/jwe/).

A Program Committee of senior researchers will review the submitted papers.
